Freebie!! After Thanksgiving Classroom Graph
I just finished this cute little After Thanksgiving Classroom Graph and Data Analysis activity. We do "large" classroom graphs at least once a month, so I thought this would be excellent for when we return to school after break. The kids love graphing like this because they feel like they are actually part of the graph. All because they get to stand up and tape their own marker card on the board.......all by themselves!! Wow :0)
After you do the large classroom graph, students can fill out their own individual graph based on the information they gathered from the class graph. There is also a small graph analysis sheet included that can be completed whole group, small group, or individually.

Fun With Our High School Friends!
"Start children off on the way they should go; and even when they are old they will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6
Today we ventured over to our "big" high school. A few years ago the FACS class stared coming over to the elementary school to share a few little health and physical activity lessons they had prepared. This was always an exciting time for our Kindergarten kiddos, but let me tell you, very hectic and crazy!! This year, we are doing things a little different. We are going over there..... Yeah.... and one class at a time! (It helps that we are in a small town and the high school is right next door.)
Today we made turkeys filled with lots of yummy goodies, played Pin the Tail on the Turkey, colored a Thanksgiving picture, and played Pilgrim and Indian dodge ball. Now, that was interesting! Eventually it turned into....."Get the big kids!" lol They really loved it. The interaction that goes on between a high school student and a 5 year old is priceless! Wow!!
I would encourage you to find ways for this type of interaction. I really feel that it helps build a bond in our community and teaches the importance of togetherness and support.

Singing, Dancing and Classroom Management
"Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing." Psalm 100:2
I love to sing and dance (that is why I teach a dance class too), so this is how we start every morning. We begin with the Alphabet Song from Sing, Spell, Read & Write, and the next song is always a surprise. :0) I have about 15 different songs with routines that I rotate. The one in this picture is Here We Go Loopty Loo from the Learning Station. Dancing and singing are such a fun way to get the wiggles out and prepare for our day. (I might have to videotape my actions!)
Next.....when I am ready to start talking and teaching, I am ready to start! :0) No one wants to waste time telling kids to stop talking, turn around, etc. An 11 year old is very different than a 5 year old, and I quickly realized I needed a plan for this when I made the move from 6th grade to Kindergarten. So, I found another song. I use The More We Get Together, by Jim Stone, for any "clean up" time in the classroom. The kids recognize this song and know that when they hear it, they are to clean up what ever we have out and meet me at the tables.
Finally, use songs for procedures whenever you can. I have two songs I play for transition time to our squares. Our squares are where we have calendar time, story time, direct instruction time, or large group activities. The kids know that when the songs stop, no matter what time of the day it is, they must be giving me 5 things.....with out me asking for them.....sitting crisscross, hands in their lap, eyes on me, mouth closed and ears listening! Wow, amazing, and I don't have to say a single thing! For this I use Special Me and Miss Sue from Dr. Jean. The important thing to remember is, put the songs you use at the bottom of your playlist or make a separate playlist for them. You don't want to be running over to push stop when everyone is ready to go and listening! :0)

Fun in DC
Today we visited the White House and the Capital. We also meet with Pat Roberts, one of our Kansas Senators. Don't worry, I passed all the security checks and didn't get stopped by the secret service. :0) lol.
It is definitely a cool feeling to know you are standing and walking in the same place where America's Presidents did the exact same thing. :0). I definitely learned a lot today about our capital......wow.....incredible.

I left this morning for Washington, DC with a group of teachers from our building to officially receive the National Blue Ribbon Award our school received this year!

Honoring Our Veterans
Friday we honored our local Veterans with our annual Veteran's Day Program. A big thanks goes out to those who helped make this day special!
The students at Marshall Elementary will always remember those who served this country and brought honor our name.
